‘Jalan Jalan’ means ‘to go sightseeing’, ‘to journey’ and through this unique international event we invite you to take a journey with us into the world of Indonesian culture and literature. Enjoy the music of the gamelan performed live in the Centre’s beautiful garden, taste complimentary Indonesian street food and a glass of wine, and meet internationally acclaimed children’s author and musician Reda Gaudiamo.

Reda is one of Indonesia’s most celebrated musicians and writers, whose novels for young adults have been published in Indonesia and the UK. She has also worked as a journalist, was the chief editor of Cosmopolitan Indonesia and also a publisher of Kompas Gramedia’s Women and Lifestyle Magazine Division which included several international lifestyle magazines in Indonesia.

In conversation with YA author and broadcaster Chenèe Marrapodi, Reda will share insights into her diverse career and perform a selection of traditional Indonesian songs and poems from her repertoire.

Proceed to the gravel parking lot located at the top of Knutsford Street and pass through the gate, parking on the lawn is free.

REDA GAUDIAMO is an Indonesian author and musician born in Surabaya in East Java. She is the author of several collections of short stories and books for young adults, including the Na Willa series. The adventures of Na Willa; Na Willa and the house at the end of the alley; and Tentang Kita (About Us, 2015), have all been published in the UK by Emma Press as well as in Indonesia. She has won several awards for her short fiction and novels.

Reda has also worked as a journalist, was the chief editor of Cosmopolitan Indonesia and also a publisher of Kompas Gramedia’s Women and Lifestyle Magazine Division which included several international lifestyle magazines in Indonesia.

Reda is also known as a musician and singer. For more than 30 years she performed as a duo with her artistic partner, the late Ari Malibu, creating musical interpretations of poems.

In 2018 Reda was awarded a writer’s residence in the UK by the National Book Committee of Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture. She has been a presenter at many international writers festivals including the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and London Book Fair. She has also co-produced festivals such as Festival Musikal Indonesia.

CHENÉE MARRAPODI is a children’s author and journalist, based in Perth, Western Australia. Her middle grade novel, One Wrong Turn, was published by Fremantle Press in 2023. Chenée is also an experienced MC, and the host of the Writers off the Page podcast. Chenée has worked in the media industry for almost a decade and is currently a producer for Channel Nine News. She has also worked as a reporter for Channel Seven's Today Tonight, as well as online news and radio.
