Authors and Illustrators
The Literature Centre has worked with some of Australia’s most awarded and acclaimed Authors and Illustrators since we commenced in 2012.
Within our building, the Centre offers a two bedroom residence for Authors and Illustrators to stay with us while they conduct school sessions, and also while they create. After all, some of our nation’s top picture books resulted in collaborations formed at our Centre between visiting Authors and Illustrators! Something we are very proud to nurture and support.
There are a number of ways your students can meet, hear from, or workshop with an Author or Illustrator of children’s and young adult literature.
‘Meet the Author/Illustrator’ Sessions
These popular sessions are a fantastic way for your students to meet a published Author or Illustrator and hear about the process involved in creating their books, how their career began, and what book they will release next.

Talented Young Writers’ Programme (TYWP)
Each term, several groups of students come together for a full day workshop with one of Australia’s top Authors for young adults. The highly successful TYWP has been expanding steadily over the past 10 years, and incorporates two age groups: Youth Literature Day students (years 9-12) and Young Writers’ Day students (years 7-8). The Programme is now conducted in 6 locations across WA each school term: Fremantle, Bunbury, Busselton, Albany, Geraldton, and now in Port Hedland and Newman with the support of our Principal Partner, BHP Billiton Iron Ore.
The purpose of the TYWP is to nurture a group of young writers over several years by exposing them to superb Authors, but also enabling them to meet and form friendships with other like-minded readers and writers. The students find these one day workshops informative, practical, intense, inspiring and fun. The students will have a well developed piece of writing by the end of each workshop.
The Authors who work with us are carefully chosen because of their list of critically acclaimed publications in many genre, a warm and empowering presentation style, different personalities and backgrounds, and a varied approach to the craft of writing. Each Author is a brilliant teacher of his/her craft. The Literature Centre's Director or Education Officers manage each day, working alongside the presenting Author.
There are so many Authors involved in the programme, across six locations in Western Australia. Please click through to the 'TYWP Writers' section of this website for further details and a timetable.
