James Moloney has published over 40 books, and is one of Australia's leading authors of children and young adult books.
James was born in Sydney and was into every sport going - cricket, footy, swimming - when he was growing up. He was even a champion long jumper! After University, he became a teacher and eventually found himself in Cunnamulla, a little 'outback' town where many Indigenous Australians live. These turned out to be important years for his writing.
In 1980, he took a year's leave, stuffed a backpack full of clothes and went off to see the world. He stepped over rotting dog carcasses in Mexico City, got all weepy in a roomful of Impressionist paintings and met some fascinating people.
In 1983 James married and started work at Marist College, in Brisbane, where he stayed for fifteen years. During this time, he became interested in writing for young people, at first using the ideas and experiences gained from his time in Cunnamulla, mixed with the thinking and wondering he had done overseas. After his early attempts were rejected, the first of his novels, Crossfire, was published in 1992.
Swashbuckler won the 1996 CBCA Book of the Year for Young Readers and in 1997, his fifth novel for young adults, A Bridge to Wiseman's Cove, won the CBCA Book of the Year for Older Readers.
The Book of Lies first started as James pondered the use of the lie detectors in the O.J. Simpson court case years ago. Master of the Books and The Book from Baden Park complete the epic fantasy adventure. He then went on to release Silvermay, the first in a new trilogy, and by 2012 he released Tamlyn which is book two in the trilogy. Lucien, the third book in the series, will be released in June 2013.
James was a popular presenting author for the Talented Young Writers' Programme (TYWP) in 2012, taking workshops in Fremantle, Albany and Geraldton. James once again inspired and educated young minds in 2013 when he returned to Fremantle and traveled to Bunbury for the Programme.
