Alison Lester is one of Australia's most popular authors. She has written and illustrated over 25 picture books, and her first novel, The Quicksand Pony, quickly became a bestseller. Her books are published in many languages and are loved by children around the world. Alison's sure sense of colour and design, her humour, and her keen observation of the details of children's lives make her books lasting favourites.
Alison grew up on a farm overlooking the sea and first rode a horse as a baby in her father's arms. She trained as an art teacher, and after teaching and traveling for some time, she settled with her husband and three children on a farm in the Victorian countryside. She still lives in the country and rides her horse whenever she can. She believes children need adventures and the freedom to imagine. She has always been a bookworm and often reads for hours in the middle of the night. 'I love the way books take you to another world, no matter what's going on in your life.’
Alison spends part of every year travelling to schools in remote areas using her books to help adults and children write and draw about their own lives. Alison’s picture book Running with the Horses (2009) actually began 15 years earlier after a call from an editor. Despite writing the story almost straight away, the book kept getting put aside for other projects. It wasn’t until 2008 that Alison was able to find a way to create the illustrations that she saw in her head.
Alison’s book One Small Island, written and illustrated with Coral Tulloch, is a timely reminder of the need to protect the environment and the degradation that can happen in the hands of humans. The book leaves us reflective about Macquarie Island's uniqueness, but more importantly, wondering what we can do to save it. Fittingly, One Small Island was one of two winners of the 2012 Wilderness Society's Environment Award for Children's Literature and also won the 2012 CBCA Eve Pownell Award for non-fiction.
Alison's recent book, Kissed by the Moon, a lyrical lullaby for small babies was short-listed for the 2014 CBCA Picture Books for Early Childhood award.
Alison Lester (together with Boori Monty Pryor) was Australia's Inaugural Children's Laureate throughout 2012 and 2013.
